Tell Senators: Vote No on Bill C-12

Prime  Minister Carney rammed Bill C-12 through the House of Commons last fall trying to ignore the hundreds of thousands of us who oppose this anti-immigrant bill.

But we didn't stop. We kept pushing Senators. And when the Senate Social Affairs Committee (SOCI) finally heard from refugees, migrants, and civil society – over 35 witnesses and 36 written submissions across more than 13 hours of testimony – the truth came out. On Friday, SOCI released a report calling for the complete removal of the immigration sections of Bill C-12 (Parts 5–8), citing grave concerns about human rights violations, privacy, unconstitutionality, and disproportionate harm to children, women, 2SLGBTQI+ people, and frontline service providers.

That is a direct result of your pressure. Thank you.

SOCI’s recommendations are not binding. A different committee - the Standing Senate Committee on National Security, Defence and Veterans Affairs (SECD) is the one that has the final say and it has begun its clause-by-clause review of Bill C-12 TODAY. Keep it simple and personal. You can say something like: "I'm calling to urge Senator [name] to support the SOCI committee's recommendation to remove Parts 5–8 of Bill C-12. These sections violate human rights, undermine privacy, and will cause serious harm to migrants, refugees, and their families. Don’t fall for anti-immigrant scapegoating." 

--- WHY IT MATTERS ---

Parts 5–8 of Bill C-12 would:

  • Allow the government to share migrants' private information – including with foreign governments – putting people fleeing persecution at serious risk

  • Automatically abandon refugee claims when people miss deadlines, with no flexibility for vulnerable claimants like unaccompanied minors

  • Give cabinet sweeping power to cancel permanent residency cards and immigration documents based on vague "public interest" criteria – with no meaningful oversight

  • Bar tens of thousands of good-faith refugee applicants from making claims, retroactively, with no exceptions for changed circumstances
